Slava watches – history
Slava is one of the classic Soviet watch brands with a long industrial and cultural background. Its origins go back to the early Soviet watchmaking industry in Moscow.
The brand was developed by the Second Moscow Watch Factory, which began operating in the 1920s–1930s after the Soviet Union acquired equipment from American clock and watch companies such as Ansonia and Dueber Hampden to build its own watch production system.
By the 1950s, the factory started producing watches under the name “Slava” (meaning “Glory”), focusing mainly on civilian wristwatches rather than military or space use.
During the Soviet era, Slava became known as an “everyman’s watch” brand, producing affordable and reliable mechanical watches for daily use.
One of the most important technical features of Slava watches was their in-house mechanical movements, often using double barrel systems, which improved stability and power delivery compared to simpler designs of the time.
Slava watches were widely exported across many countries during the 1970s–1980s, and at times a large part of production went outside the USSR.
After the collapse of the Soviet Union, the original factory eventually closed in the 2000s, but the Slava brand name was later revived and continues today through new ownership
